Beagle is desktop search software, but I don’t like this weird cool stuff on my desktop. In new zypper from openSUSE 11.0, there are a new options named addlock, removelock, locks. Now it is possible to kick out Beagle forever. :-)

First you have to remove all related package with this command:

zypper remove *beagle*

Now, you have to lock all this packages in status “not installed” by command zypper addlock package-name. You can do this with this command:

zypper addlock *beagle*

Now you have system without Beagle. Thanks to zypper developer for this feature! Enjoy! :)

I have not used Beagle for a long time. I moved to recall when it came out. Much faster, less resource and actually finds what you are looking for.

I think that first command could be reduced to:
“zypper remove libbeagle1″ and zypper will take care of dependencies and thus uninstall all mentioned packages. Probably the same could be done with locking: it should be enough to lock just libbeagle1 in uninstalled state so any other packages depending on it can’t be installed either. (I have not tried it, but in my opinion it should work.)

What the heck is wrong with the new Beagle?

I also didn’t like the previous versions of Beagle, but the new one seems lot faster and more usable. I consider switching from Google Desktop Search (which is also not bloat free) to the new Beagle as soon as I install openSUSE 11.0. Probably over the weekend. Cheers!

2Pavol Rusnak: Good point, but this didn’t work for me in Beta 5. Maybe it works in final release, I have no idea.

2dum8d0g: Yes, we have zypper remove, but this addlock keep removed package in removed status.

Beagle is the best available desktop search engine. I love it. Or I shall love it until Strigi will have same or better abilities. :-)

What about “zypper addlock *beagle*” ?

    Yes, zypper support wildcard :)

2Spyhawk: Good point, I forgot. New feature ;-) But it was my feature request, I should be in shame. :-) Tested, post was updated. Thanks.

    Much better:

    zypper addlock *mono*

  11. anicka Says:

Actually I have done quite the same to my new installations. But my first command looked like this: zypper rm mono-core

And my desktop runs smoothly again - do you know even faster way how to remove all this c**p? ;-)
