One friend of mine is developer of nice download manager called fatrat, this download manager is written in Qt4 toolkit and provides some kind of advanced feature and because I think this download manager deserves more publicity I wrote this short recension of it… :-)
If you want test fatrat in openSUSE 11.1 you can use packages from my OBS project called home:m4r3k:fatrat (openSUSE 11.1 repository) and I hope soon you will be able to get fatrat from openSUSE:Factory:contrib (currently I am working on clean-up of libraries and I am waiting for new release of fatrat…), so stay tuned.
Currently fatrat have this features:
- HTTP(S)/FTP downloads
- FTP uploads
- RSS feed support + special functions for TV shows and podcasts
- BitTorrent support (including torrent creating, DHT, UPnP, encryption etc.)
- Torrent search
- Support for SOCKS5 and HTTP proxies
- RapidShare.com FREE downloads
- RapidShare.com uploads
- RapidShare.com link verification and folder extraction
- RapidSafe link decoding
- MD4/MD5/SHA1 hash computing
- Remote control via Jabber (!)
- Remote control via a web interface
- YouTube video downloading
Fatrat also provide interface for plug-in modules, so fatrat can be improved with plug-ins, these plug-ins are also provided in my OBS project. Currently there are two plug-ins provided by Luboš Doležel working in current version of fatrat. First fatrat-opensubtitles provide functionality you can use to look-up online for subtitles on opensubtitles.org website. Simply you can just click to any of your downloads, select choice “Check for subtitles…”, select files in download destination directory and find some subs for such a files. Second plug-in is called fatrat-unpack and it provide a functionality you can use to unpack rar archives, a lot of tv shows episodes are being shipped in rar archives (why for got sake?), so with this plug-in you can simply unpack this archives directly from fatrat application. :-)
You think fatrat is nice download manager? Ok, then feel free to use it and if you’re a developer, you can help on development very easily, Luboš Doležel is guy who is open to new ideas and I think he could use your patches. Application is licensed under GNU GPL license. Also if you’re not a developer, you can help with translation to your local language, sadly fatrat is not using gettext, but Qt language interface. But I think it is not a big issue…

Looks quite nice, but KGet4 is probably a greater tool ;) .

Looks really sweet but one thing I´m missing is metalink support.
Any chance you talk your friend into adding this?
(IMHO this just rocks ;D )
