I am close to my graduation (school leaving exam), but I still can’t focus to study, so I think, I should make something usable for me and other community member. I try upgrade my openSUSE 10.3 on notebook to openSUSE 11.0 Beta2 via integrated updater. I was startled, but upgrade of my really decaying openSUSE was success on first try. It is almost unbelievable, but it is true.
It was my first upgrade. So I was also startled, because upgrade tool remove a lot of third party packages, I think it is good way for upgrade. Everything is so fast and so clear :-). But first problem.. I don’t know why, but upgrade drop all of my users crontab. And rights of /usr/bin/crontab were changed as well. Now we have new group named trusted where all crontab users have to be.
marek@mantisha:~> ll /usr/bin/crontab -rwsr-xr-x 1 root trusted 35876 8. kvě 03.56 /usr/bin/crontab marek@mantisha:~>
So if you have problem with crontab make sure, you are in trusted group. After few minutes I make an upgrade to factory version, so I have kernel 2.6.25.2-2-pae. It is great because I have integrated CardBus bridge and this bridge is supported in this kernel version. :-)

Right now I have only one unsupported piece of hardware. It is webcam from ALi Corp. It is weird piece of hardware. People from m560x project are trying to make this webcam working, but it looks, there are version with different sensor in world wide circulation. They have one almost working version named m5602-ov9650-2 and they are cooperating with me on a new branch for my webcam named m5602-unknown, because we don’t know which sensor is used in my webcam. :D

If you are kernel hacker interested in USB device and know how to figure out which sensor is used, feel free to contact me. Because then we can look around for a documentation and make some progress with this driver. You can test both branch as well and report you results to mailinglist.
BTW: When you are upgrading users take care of KDE3. By default all (almost of?) KDE3 are dropped, so you have to select KDE3 in package manager. :-)
BTW2: New zypper is awesome. It is really fast piece of software. But my bash completion script is not really compatible with this new version. But Jano have an new upgraded version and I hope, this version will be in final openSUSE 11.0.
Few screen shots
To the end I am attaching few screen shots from openSUSE 11.0.

Supported card reader, isn’t it great? :-)

Nice splash, isn’t it?

New YaST icons and refactored modules. (Some merge)

Package manager start. It is really fast right now.

New Firefox 3 Beta 5. It is really fast as well. But take care, it does not support Google Sync extension.

Take care about a in default jsou blbosti. Dál už jsem neměl sílu číst. :( Proč si to nezkontroluješ, než se to objeví na planetsuse.org?
